I received a phone call this weekend that I placed Third in my category for the Dog Days of August contest. I won a gift card for Petco. They will have the stories posted on their site in a week or so, and I will like to it when they have that up. My first contest and I actually placed. That makes me happy. It’s encouraging and makes me want to attack that piece for the WOW contest this week.

I had such great plans to enter two contests by the end of August. One was the WOW (Women On Writing) Summer 2008 contest . I have a pieces, it is only 483 words, but I just wasn’t happy with it. I’m not sure what the problem was exactly, but there were a few paragraphs that just felt weak and cliche. So I’m going to take a break from it for a few weeks, work on some other projects and come back to it. I may try writing it from a different perspective or play with some other details. I have time to work on it and send it for the Fall 2008 contest instead.
The second piece was for a local charity contest, Dog Days of August. You had to write a story about your pet, based on one the provided themes. The great part was that the entry fee went directly to the animal rescue group of my choice. I managed to write 600+ words (I don’t remember the count off the top of my head) about the day my dog and I met, from her perspective. I entered mainly for the experience, but also because the contest helps animal rescues, and I’m for that.
I signed up for Nanowrimo. I have plenty of time to think about that one. Working on some plot ideas and I’ll start making notes and outline over the next two months. I’ve never tried this before, and I’m certain I won’t write an entire novel, but I want the challenge.
I’m going to try to get some word count widgets set up, once I figure those out, so you can follow along with my progress on that.
